Helpful Information On Bra Fitting

Use the tape measure as a guide only, it’s how the bra fits that matters. Check the top tips below to make sure you are wearing the most comfortable size for you. Remember, different styles might suit your shape better than others and each lingerie brand uses different wires and measurements so you might be a different size in different retailers or lingerie brands. It’s important to understand that the band size and the cup size work together. One of the most common misconceptions is that a D cup is always bigger than a C or B cup. In fact, a bra’s cup size is dependent on its band size – so a 32D holds the same volume as a 34C but is actually smaller than a 38B. If, for example, you are currently wearing a 36DD and you want to go down a band size but keep the same cup, you will need a 34E, not a 34DD, to accommodate your breasts. If, on the other hand, you are wearing the correct band size but wish to try a different a cup size, all you need to do to is move up or down a letter size.

Top Tips For A Comfortable Bra

  1. The cups should not be baggy. If they are, try going down a cup size.

  2. Spilling out over the tops or sides of your cups means that you're wearing too small a cup size and need to try the next one up.

  3. The main support from a bra comes from the band, not the straps. Make sure that you're wearing the correct band size: too big, and your straps will end up taking the weight, which will cause them to dig in.

  4. Look in the mirror side-on. Your bra band should be at the same level all the way round. If it's riding up at the back, you probably need a smaller band size.

  5. Straps should be parallel or slightly V shaped.

  6. Your bra band should feel tight and firm, but with enough space to insert two fingers under the back band, and one under the centre front.

  7. When you buy a new bra, make sure that it fits properly on the loosest hook; you might need to tighten it with wear. A bra can grow up to 4" due to wash and wear.

  8. The centre front of your bra should lie flat against the breastbone. If it doesn't, go up a cup size.

  9. Check the wire at the side of the bra. It should sit on the ribcage, without digging into any of the breast tissue, the underwire should follow the natural crease of the breast.
